Alexander Macdonald Bequest, 1901
This was one of four works that Macdonald commissioned from his friend Horsely, and later bequeathed to the gallery. Helen Valentine tells us that despite his rather stern appearance, Horsley had a "genial temperament," and indeed he writes warmly about numerous friends in his "recollections."
