Study of a Woman
Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875)
Watercolour on paper
Support: 89 x 63 mm
Presented by Miss Frances Burlison through the Art Fund 1928
This shows the woman, whose plain dress is enlivened with a blue belt and blue trimmings which match the ribbon in her hair, smiling in what seems to be a short sleep. The model would most likely have been the artist's wife, who died young but whose presence continued to pervade his art. Jacqueline Banerjee
