The date of the present drawing has been read as either 1890 or 1920. The latter seems more probable, both on stylistic grounds — Shannon's draughtsmanship increasingly tended towards a looser and more impressionistic style, which is very marked in the present drawing — and because, as a general rule, Shannon only began to abbreviate his initials in the present form after the turn of the century. This is a later example of a drawing where Shannon adopts the fashions and mood of Rossetti's era. — Hilary Morgan
