Little eight-year-old Cicely was the second of the five daughters of W. C. Alexander, a successful London banker, who may have met the artist through their shared interest in Oriental art, which Alexander collected. As Frances Fowle says in the gallery's summary, "Whistler adds a touch of Japonisme to the portrait through the gold-edged black dado and wall divider, and the delicate daisies and butterflies."
