McCrispin: — “Quite right to get a pair of shows, Molly, your feel ’ill lool illigant in leather!”

Molly: — “But, sire. I Can;t pay for them till Christmas!”

McC (after a pause): — “Troth, and it ’ud be a pitty to hide such a purty foot, acushla!”

This cartoon manages to combine two things for which the English mocked the Irish — their poverty (the woman cannot even afford shows) and a quick-thinking gift of gab from the shoemaker who quickly reverses his field when he realizes money is not immediately forthcoming. He’s not about to give credit. — George P. Landow.
