Prophecies for the New Year. Signed “HPD.” Fun (28 December 1887): 276. Courtesy of the Suzy Covey Comic Book Collection in the George A. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida. “In the dim cloudland of the Future, FUN’s prophetic eye has discerned certain weird and wonderful events about to happen in the forthcoming year.” The cartoonist has mixed rather ordinary events — missing umbrellas, couples courting, men drinking too much, and Queen Victoria leaving London for Balmoral — with two political predictions, the first of which is that both the army and navy will claim they are disastrously underfunded, the second that Ireland (the young woman with shamrocks on her skirt) will be in distress.
