Pre-Raphaelite and Academician

[Pre-Raphaelite and Academician]. Punch (18 June 1859): 254.

Old Streekie, R.A., thought it very hard that he could not run down to the Sea-side for a week, after the opening of the Academy, without meeeting “that pre-Raphaelite fellow Cleevidge loafing arbout there, the first time he walks out.”

This cartoon makes clear the way as late as 1859 members of the Royal Academy considered the PRB annoyingly bohemian. By that date Holman Hunt certainly had a big, bushy beard.
