A Caution to Imperial Birds of Prey

Wood engraving

November 5, 1853

The caption continues: “Mr. Bull to his French Friend: ‘There, I don't think he'll worry the turkeys any more.’”

John Bull, wearing a farmer's smock, assures the French peasant, that his nailing the dead bird — here the heraldic arms of Russia — to the side of his barn will frighten away other predators.
