Here at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, Tess is apprehended by the police for the murder of Alec D'Urberville. Hardy chose the setting for the melodramatic climax of Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1891) because of its associations with human sacrifice in Britain's pre-Christian era. [PVA].
