The design alludes to one of Hardy's favourite biblical passages (1 Kings 19), which he refers to in the poem "Quid Hic Agis?" Although Hardy was not a devout Anglican, he loved all the traditions associated with the local church, and deplored the elimination of its "quire" (musicians) in Under the Greenwood Tree [PVA].
