According to the editors, many of whose remarks seem based on Thomas Hardy's Wessex (1913) by Herman Lea,

The way to the cottage in the village of Cresscombe, suggestive of Letcombe Bassett, is easily found from Wantage by direct road. Following beside the river for a short distance, a picturesque thatched cottage is discovered standing right among the watercress beds. This cottage was the model for the description of the home of Arabella Don, and here Jude first met her.
