According to the Lonely Planet Guide to Venice, St. Roch "was born in 1295 in Montpellier, France, and at the age of 20 began wandering through Italy and Southern France helping plague victims. He died in 1327 and a cult soon grew around him. His body was transferred to Venice in 1485" (132).
