Chapter two, note 12, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
It is possible that Simpson was the author of the article on "Savonarola" in the Rambler for November and December 1853, which is a similar treatment ascertained by of a difficult subject. The article is remarkable for its frank acknowledgement of scandals in the history of the Church: "A Catholic cannot play tricks with Church history without injury to himself and others." Rambler, XII (Nov. 1853), 343.
