Acton's early articles in the "Weekly Register"

Josef L. Altholz, Professor of History, University of Minnesota

Chapter three, note 36, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Weekly Register, 17 May 1856, p. 5, cols. 2-4; 29 Nov. 1856, p. 6, cols. 3-4; 6 Dec. 1856, pp. 8-9; 31 Jan. 1857, p. 5, cols. 4-5. (I am indebted for these references to Abbé Victor Conzemius.)

Acton to Döllinger, 27 Nov. and 4 Dec. 1856, Woodruff MSS., indicate that Acton was quite close to Wilberforce at this time.
