Editions of Acton's Correspondencem

Josef L. Altholz, Professor of History, University of Minnesota

Chapter four, note 1, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Acton's correspondence with Simpson has been edited by Abbot (later Cardinal) Gasquet, Lord Acton and his Circle (London, 1906). Gasquet, an unsatisfactory editor, muted or suppressed many of Acton's stronger expressions. See rDoml A[elred] Watkin and Herbert Butterfield, "Gasquet and the Acton-Simpson Correspondence," Cambridge Historical Journal, X (1950), 75-105.
