Chapter six, note 21, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Acton to Simpson, 20 and 21 April and 30 Sept. 1859, in Abbot Gasquet, Lord Acton and his Circle (London, 1906), pp. 68, 70 and 87. The following articles in the Correspondant (n.s., Vols. XVII and XVIII) appear to be by Simpson: "Lettre sur le r&ocic;le des catholiques dans les derni`res 6lections en Angleterre," May 1859, 167-171; I'Lettre de Londres," June 1859, 374-377; "Lettre de Londres"' Sept. 1859, 174-180. The second letter provoked a critic to reply: "Lettre de Londres," July 1859, 544-548.
