Acton's Election

Josef L. Altholz, Professor of History, University of Minnesota

Chapter six, note 25, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

A to Father Maher, 8 May 1859, cited in James J. Auchmuty, "Acton's Election as an Irish Member of Parliament," English Historical Review, LXI (Sept. 1946), 401-an excellent study of this curious election. Auchmuty was not aware of the reason of Acton's absence, his illness, for which see A to S, 2 May 1859, Downside MSS.
