Newman's "On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine"

Josef L. Altholz, Professor of History, University of Minnesota

Chapter six, note 28, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Newman, "On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine," Rambler, n.s., I (July 1859), 198-230. The article was "communicated" rather than editorial," the author signing himself "O" and referring to Newman in the third person. Newman did not reprint it in his collected works, although a portion was inserted as an appendix to the third edition of his Arians of the Fourth Century (London, 1871), pp. 454-72. The only complete republication of the article in English is in Cross Currents, II (Summer 1954), 69-97.
