Chapter nine, note 8, of the author's The Liberal Catholic Movement in England: The "Rambler" and its Contributors, 1848-1864, which Burns and Oates (London) published in 1962. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.
Acton, "The Protestant Theory of Persecution," Rambler, n.s., VI (March 1862), 318-351; reprinted in The History of Freedom and other Essays, ed. J. N. Figgis and R. V. Laurence (London, 1907), pp. 150-187. Gasquet (Lord Acton and his Circle, p. 258n.) says this article was by Simpson; but this is contrary to Wetherell's recollection (Downside MSS.).
