Johannes Peter Mueller (1801-1858), regarded as the founder of modern physiology. After a period of study and teaching at Bonn, he was called in 1833 to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitaet (later Humboldt-Universitaet, Humboldt University) in Berlin as professor of anatomy and physiology, where he remained until his death. His students included three bacteriological pioneers, Schwann, Remak, and Virchow.
