“This sculpture sympathetically explores the physical changes of old age, the loosening of the muscles of the face and neck, the prominent nose and cheekbones, and thinning hair. As the title suggests, it is not intended as a portrait, but as a reflection of our common humanity. The model was his wife's mother Clara Weiss” (Museum label).
