This seventeenth-century soldier, like the contemporary one on the other side of the memorial, stands rather jauntily at ease. He wears a plumed hat and has a sheathed sword at his waist, and across his chest carries a supply of powder charges for his musket. The detail of his uniform has been well researched. The National Portrait Gallery describes John as an "academic sculptor," and reminds us that he designed the regalia for the Prince of Wales's investiture in 1911.
