Lawson's Iron Duke stands in the cultural heart of Liverpool on a tall Doric column. "The bronze for the monument is supposed to have come from French cannon captured during the Napoleonic wars, and the names of forgotten battles are written in huge letters on the great panels at its base" (Lewis 106). Wellington's name is also written on one of the panels, beneath the bronze garlanding held by bronze eagles. The panel on the south side of the pedestal has a vivid relief of "the final battle at Waterloo" (Cavanagh 28).
