Commentary from the Maas Gallery catalogue

Nevil Story Maskelyne (1823-1911) taught mineralogy and chemistry in Oxford before becoming a Professor of Minerology (1856-1895). He was keeper of Minerals at the British Museum from 1856-80 where he maintained and developed the collection, adding over 43,000 specimens and making it the largest and best arranged of its kind. He and his wife Thereza M. Llewelyn were both involved in the pioneering of Photography and he was a close friend of William Fox Talbot, who invented the concept of the photographic negative. Maskelyne was also MP for Cricklade from 1880-1892.

Munro was a close associate of the Pre-Raphaelites, especially of Rossetti and the only sculpting Brother Thomas Woolner. He wrote in a letter "... there are times when sculpture speaks to us with infinitely greater power than painting can — in the twilight-evening - more suggestive hours when paintings are really flat..."
