The Stone Thrower

The Stone Thrower

Sir W. Hamo Thornycroft, R. A.

Bronze, mid brown patination

Signed "H. Thornycroft and dated 1881."

27 1/2 inches (69.9 cm.)

"Until the discovery of this cast by the Miles Gallery, the only known cast of this work was in the collection of the Leighton House Museum. In 1880, when he was just thirty years old, such was the enthusiasm for his work at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy that Hamo Thornycroft was A.R.A. in January of the following year. The model for the sculpture was Orazio Cervi." — Sir Alfred Gilbert and the New Sculpture, 103
