Charlotte Brontë on Thackeray's Writing

Peter L. Shillingsburg, Professor of English, Mississippi State University

Note 4 to the Introduction of the author's Pegasus in Harness: Victorian Publishing and W. M. Thackeray, which University Press of Virginia published in 1992. It has been included in the Victorian Web with the kind permission of the author, who of course retains copyright.

Charlotte Brontë accused (I think that is the right word) Thackeray of being Warrington rather than Pen, but Thackeray found writing in George's style for the Morning Chronicle less to his liking than writing in Pen's for Punch (Letters 2: 784-85, 225).
