Newgate Gaol

Newgate Gaol designed by George Dance, Junior. 1770-82. Photograph c. 1895. According to Betjeman, "The design was deliberately sombre and fortress-like, and the blank walls made interesting by rusticated blocks and recesses. Public hangings took place outside the gaol until May 1868" [GPL].
