“Saint John's College was founded in 1555 by Sir Thomas White, Lord Mayor of London, on the site of the old Cistercian College (1437). The front and W. side of the first quadrangle are remnants of St. Bernard's College” (Muirhead, 222). The doorwat before which people are standing leads to Canterbury Quadrangle

Three details of the Front Quad: (a) a corner doorway surrounded by flowering plants, (b) a coat of arms above another doorway that leads to Canterbury Quadrangle, the next quad. (c) cupola with wind vane.
