Cloth casing, with a gilt device.

A repeat of Hablot Knight Browne’s [Phiz’s] chromolithographic illustration facing p. 24.

1866

Gilt blocking on plain maroon cloth

9¼ x 7 inches

A good example of work from the latter part of Phiz’s career following his break with Dickens. The book is a vigorous piece of comic art, presented to the buying public in the form of a slim volume with coloured illustrations and enhanced with a gilt device taken from one of the artist’s designs. Like all gift books of the period, this is a rare piece, with few copies surviving in the original cloth binding.
