Flower Urn

William De Morgan (1839-1917)

circa 1890

13 3/4 inches; 34 cm.

Large flower urn on pedestal foot, decorated in Persian colours. Signed on base FP for Fred Passenger, painter

A friend and colleague of William Morris (1834-1896). De Morgan was a great admirer of Persian and ancient pottery and spent a lot of energy experimenting with glazes and firing, to produce rich colours and lustrous finishes. Although he designed almost all the pieces they were generally painted by his assistants and partners, such as the brothers Charles and Frederick Passenger. These two stunning, large pieces of William De Morgan pottery amply demonstrate his main interests and influences: hispano-moresque lustreware and Persian colour and design.
