[Young woman with flowers in her hair]. Watercolour highlighted with gilt, signed lower right W.J. NEATBY. Date unknown, but part of a set of three, known to have been given as a wedding gift in 1919. Size: H 15 x W 8 cm, shown on the right in its frame, which is 4 cm in width.

The woman's face is reminiscent of Pre-Raphaelite portraits, especially those of Rossetti, but is framed in a hand-mirror design, of distinctly turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau style. This is just the kind of item that Neatby, with his particular talent for metalwork, might make himself. She seems to be looking at herself, questioning the effect she might have on others (and maybe a little bit challenging!).
