Dickens's A Tale of Two Cities, Book III, chapter 8 ("A Hand at Cards")

The twenty-fourth installment of the novel appeared in Harper's Weekly (22 October 1859): 685; it had originally appeared in the UK on Saturday, 15 October in All the Year Round

This illustration depicts armed Jacobins in the wineshop bearing "the sign of The Good Republican Brutus of Antiquity," which Miss Pross enters only "slightly observant of the smoky lights; of the people, pipe in mouth, playing with limp cards and yellow dominoes; of the one bare-breasted, bare-armed, soot-begrimed workman reading a journal aloud, and of the others listening to him; of the weapons worn, or laid aside to be resumed."
