Mr Wind deflated
Wood engraving by an unidentified engraver
5¼ x1½ inches
Illustration for Paul de Musset,Mr Wind and Madam Rain,p.100.
A grotesque image in which the artist demonstrates his droll and off-beat humour. Positioned in the interface between comedy and horror, Mr Wind’s ghastly detumescence is the sort of mid-Victorian illustration that frightened its juvenile audience as much as it entertained it.
