Faustine

Harry Clarke

1928

Illustration for Swinburne's Selected Poems

Diana L. Johnson points out that Clarke's image “represents a perfect marriage between author and illustrator. The aura of Swinburne's images of decadence and decay is totally captured in Clarke's portrayal of this fatal woman surrounded by grotesque and macabre figures, most of whom are overtly sexual” (55).
