Social Lions

Social Lions by Richard Doyle. 2½ x 3 inches. Wood-engraving by an unidentified engraver [probably Joseph Swain]. W. M. Thackeray,The Newcomes, I, 71.[Click on image to enlarge it.]

This 'small cut' inserted as a tailpiece at the end of Chapter VII. The cartoon visualizes the idea of 'lionizing' — moving in elite social groups — by taking the expression entirely literally. This is a motif derived from Grandville and George Cruikshank. VG logo
