Madame hypnotised

George du Maurier

10 January 1863

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain.

6 x 4½ inches

This is the sixth illustration for Charles Warren Adams’sThe Notting Hill Mystery in Once a Week 8 (10 January 1863): 1.

A classic ‘Sensational illustration’, which depicts a middle-class woman in a socially embarrassing situation, wearing her nightdress, unaware of her surroundings, and spied upon by the servants. The breaking of the codes of propriety figures throughout the genre and du Maurier provides what at the time of production was unquestionably a shocking image.
