Nanny, nanny

’Nanny, Nanny’

George du Maurier

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain

5½ x 3½ inches

Gaskell, Elizabeth.Lizzie Leigh and Other Tales, frontispiece

du Maurier has a sharp eye for nuance and here, as throughout his illustrations for Gaskell, he suggests the characters’ depth of feeling by focusing on telling gestures and significant looks. The tenderness of the scene exemplifies his sensitive and emotional reading of her texts.
