Among the Flowers

Paul Gray

1866

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain

7 x 5 inches

Illustration for ‘A Curate’s’ ‘Cottage Poems, IV: Among the Flowers’,The Sunday Magazine (1866): facing p.624.

Gray’s take on the sentimental combination of children and nature; the vertical arrangement of the composition is typical of his interest in unusual perspectives. It also embodies his predilection for heavily worked, scratchy surfaces rather than heavy blocking in the manner of contemporaries such as George Pinwell.
