‘On the Bluff at Long Branch, at the bathing Hour,’ 1870. Wood engraving drawn by Homer and engraved at Harper’s premises. 8 7/8 x 13 5/8 inches. Harper’s Weekly, XIV (August 6, 1870): 504. Homer did numerous beach and marine scenes, focusing on the middle-classes at play. In this image he conveys the ungainliness of contemporary female dress, with the ladies’ hems rising up in the wind – a scene lacking in propriety that would never appear in British illustration of the period.
