‘Come!,’ 1873. Wood engraving drawn by Homer and engraved by an unknown engraver. The Galaxy, VIII (September, 1869): 293. An illustration for Annie Edwards's serialized novel, 'Susan Fielding.' Edwards, an English writer, was appreciated for her racy love-stories, and Homer captures the writer's oft-noted immediacy by showing a key moment of transition which reflects on the modernity of the eastern states. Typically, the emphasis is on dynamic movement and spontaneity, an effect heightened by the unusual viewpoint.
