Lucius Mason in his study

The Angel of Light

John Everett Millais

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

6¼ x 4¼ inches

Anthony Trollope, Orley Farm, Vol 1, facing p. 282.

Lucius Mason’s agonized contemplation of his debts, his studies and the implications of the forthcoming charges made against his mother. The illustration is another intense moment, though the artist finds time to detail the nails in the sole of the character’s shoe: nature and human nature in the manner of Pre-Raphaelite realism.
