Moses Strikes the Rock

Moses Strikes the Rock

Edward Poynter

Wood engraving by the Dalziels.

9 x 6½ inches

Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, plate 34

Numbers,xx: 10– 11. A highly animated composition which shows the thirsty Israelites drinking the water that Moses has brought forth from the red cliffs of Edom. Each figure is an accomplished study of the human form and again recalls the heroic treatments of Poynter’s painting. The sun rays in the top left signal new hope and the design is dominated by the patriarch’s gesture, pointing upward to God.
