Jacob hears the voice of the Lord

Frederick Sandys

1863; published 1880

Wood engraving by the Dalziels

7 3/8 x 5¾ inches

Illustration for Dalziels’ Bible Gallery, plate.21.

This design illustrates the moment of revelation in Jeremiah 2:4: ‘Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel’. Sandys shows the moment in terms that are fearful rather than comforting. Produced in 1863, but not published until the end of 1880, the illustration exemplifies the artist’s focus on psychological drama in the form of the crisis experienced by a commanding single figure.
