Hagar and Ishmael

A scene from Genesis, xxi: 14. It shows the rejection of Ishmael and Hagar, with Abraham watching them, grief stricken, in the background. Hagar’s gesture, enfolding their son in her cloak, is one of many images of enclosure, the metaphors of protection and nurture, that run throughout the series.
