West Window: St George: The Presentation in the Temple; St David, by William Aikman (1868-1959), 1926, at St Matthew's, Ashford, Surrey. Like two other windows in the church, this was installed in memory of Marianne Henrietta Martindell, who died on 8 March 1925. Her residence is given in the inscription at the foot of the window as Chelston in Ashford, and from the flanking figures of St George and St David, it would seem that she had a connection with the local Welsh School (later St David's) which did so much to fund the church. This was clearly a prominent local family: of the children who erected these memorial windows, one, her second son, was Chief Engineer and Secretary to the Government at Burma (Death notice in the Times of 4 August 1933, p.1).
