The Crucifixion and the Resurrection

Clayton & Bell (attributed)

After 1877

St Matthew's, Ashford, Surrey

This window, the first in the north aisle, is one of two in memory of Sir John Edward Harington (1821-1877), who had died at the age of 55. He had been a Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards, and Deputy Lieutenant of Middlesex (Ashford was in Middlesex until it became a part of Surrey in 1965). In rich colours it conveys from these climactic episodes both the grief and the hope of those left behind: the angels hold the message, "He is risen as he said" (from Matthew 28, 6).
