The Visitation

John Henry Dearle, 1859-1932

Manufacturer: Morris and Co.

1910

Epiphany Chapel, Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire

This is the second in a series of four Morris windows in the chapel. It matches the others, which use Sir Edward Burne-Jones's designs, and, following his Annunciation, shows a young and slender Virgin Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth, who will bear John the Baptist. But it does not come up to the others in vibrancy, as far as the figures are concerned: unfortunately perhaps it is followed by Burne-Jones's beautiful Nativity, which is featured on the front cover of the local guide to Morris & Co.'s stained glass (see Bond and Dear).
