Jesus and the Children, by F. Hamilton Jackson (1848-1923), with a closer view of Jesus blessing the little boy who is sitting on his knee, in St Alban's Church, Acton Green, London W4. Dating from 1890, this is at the top of the north aisle, and shows Jesus with a mother holding her infant, another one clinging to her gown, and two older children watching. There are bluebells and irises in the foreground. This episode appears in both Matthew and Luke, and is often referred to simply as "Suffer Little Children" (Jesus's words to the disciples who had been keeping the children at a distance). One of the disciples is seen here, looking on. Jesus's point is the one made in the text held by angels in Jackson's central baptistry window in the church, "Of such is the kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 19,4). Among others mentioned in the inscription is Captain George Harper, RN, no doubt from the same family ("Admiral John Harper, CB, Knight of Hanover, and Mary Anne Harper his wife") as the Harpers to whom one of the baptistry windows is dedicated.
