And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. West window, Christ Church, Chelsea. 1929. Designer: A. K. Nicholson (1871-1937). This portion of beautiful stained glass window at the West end of this church depicts Pentecost. According to the New Testament, this was the time (falling on the Jewish festival of Shavuot), when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples, giving them the ability to speak and be understood in different languages. In other words, they were endowed with the “gift of tongues.” This allowed them to preach and evangelize. In this way, Pentecost or Whitsun, as it is also known, can be taken as the birth of the Christian Church. See Acts 2.
