This document is an annotation to the author's transcription of Charles Dickens's "Philadelphia, and its Solitary Prison," from American Notes (1842)

Quaker, a member of The Society of Friends, founded by English pacifist George Fox in 1648. The colony of Pennsylvania and the city of Philadelphia ("Brotherly Love") were founded by prominent Quaker and statesman William Penn (1644-1718) in 1681 as a home for his co-religionists, who suffered persecution in England.
